Corum's Coin Watch, introduced in 1964, remains one of the most recognizable novelties in modern watchmaking, ingeniously combining historic currency with Swiss horology. Favoured by collectors and famously worn by several U.S. presidents, it is a design that has endured for decades.
This 1990s example is crafted in 18k yellow gold and features a genuine 1899 $20 American Double Eagle coin, carefully split to conceal the quartz movement beneath while preserving the coin's original appearance. A sapphire crystal minimizes reflections, allowing the intricate relief of the coin to remain the focal point. The finely beaded bezel, subtle hour divisions, and reeded case sides echo the coin's edge, reinforcing the illusion that the watch is simply the coin itself. Slim black baton hands provide crisp contrast without distracting from the engraved details.
The reverse displays the Liberty Head side of the coin with the 1899 date fully visible, exhibiting wear that reflects its history. Fitted with a custom burgundy Epsom leather strap and fastened by its original Corum 18k yellow gold buckle. The buckle is particularly appealing, carrying multiple hallmarks and maker's stamps—including Corum branding and an Au750 engraving. This is a charming blend of Americana, jewellery, and watchmaking.
