A rare and characterful find, this vintage Van Cleef & Arpels watch was designed by Gérald Genta during the 1970s — a period when creativity and bold material play defined high design.
The aesthetic closely echoes tortoiseshell, with what appears to be a tortoise-pattern resin bezel set against an 18k yellow gold case. The same warm, mottled brown tone carries through to the dial, creating a seamless and richly layered presentation. Gold-printed hour markers and a delicate minute track stand out crisply against the surface, while slim gold hands provide elegant legibility.
A cabochon crown, executed in a complementary lighter tone, ties the design together. Distinctive T-bar lugs extend from the case and are fitted with a brown suede strap that harmonizes beautifully with the overall warm palette.
Powered by a caliber 21 manual wind movement by Frédéric Piguet, a respected manufacture whose calibers were also supplied to houses such as Cartier and Piaget. It provides an incredibly slim profile to the watch.
Charming and slightly whimsical, this is a delightful little piece that wears attractively on the wrist — a warm, richly toned design that captures the spirit of 1970s elegance without excess.
