A Hidden Gem of 1970s Design – Piaget Ref. 9802D
A favorite of ours, this Piaget reference 9802D from the 1970s is a remarkable example of contemporary design featuring a belt hoop design. The dial is perhaps one of the most captivating element, so simple yet quite striking : a charcoal grey sunburst that subtly shifts hues between blue, grey, and black depending on the light.
This moody, minimalist background is enhanced by a stunning and not often seen set of golden hour markers—prismatic rectangles whose faceted surfaces catch and reflect light with a brilliance matched by the dauphine hands. The unique Piaget-signed belt hoop bracelet construction—an unconventional yet elegant approach rarely seen is composed of four individual leather segments joined by polished half-ovals and secured by a sculptural tang buckle that matches the bracelet’s motif. Powered by a manual wind movement encased within a slim oval frame. Despite its striking originality and elegance, this model has received surprisingly little attention—something we believe is a missed opportunity, as it wears with elegant presence and distinction.
