A fine and rare Gruen to offer, this Gruen Curvex Precision carries a direct link to baseball history. The case back is engraved:
“Chester Evans – 1953 Major League All Star Game – Crosley Field – Cincinnati, Ohio – National League 5, American League 1.”
This inscription commemorates the 1953 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, played at Crosley Field — right in the heart of baseball’s golden era. The National League won the game 5–1, but the real story was the extraordinary concentration of talent on the field, with many of the players now honored in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
The name “Chester Evans” engraved on the back may have belonged to a sportswriter or journalist covering the event, likely receiving the watch as a commemorative or press gift. The watch itself is beautifully preserved. Its 14k gold case displays the distinctive sculpted curvature that gave the Curvex line its name, showing only a small amount of patina. The textured dial features raised faceted gold indices with dauphine hands, “Gruen Curvex” and “Precision” printed in black, and a subsidiary seconds register. The crown is embossed with the Gruen name.
The watch is powered by a caliber 370 manual-wind movement and fitted with a leather strap whose tone is reminiscent of a baseball mitt. Notably, this exact piece was also featured by RGM Watch Repair & Restoration on their Instagram page in 2022.
Harking back to that historic game, the legends who played that day helped shape the future of the sport, paving the way for generations of players and fans who followed. Today, this watch preserves a small yet meaningful piece of that enduring history.
