A Corum’s celebrated Coin Watch, this 1980s example pairs an American $20 Double Eagle with an 18k yellow gold case. Rather than presenting itself as a conventional watch, nearly the entire face is given over to the coin, its detailed American eagle and “In God We Trust” engraving forming the dial beneath a sapphire crystal.
The genuine 1904 Double Eagle coin is carefully split to accommodate a manual-wind movement, preserving the appearance of the original coin on both sides. A finely beaded bezel and reeded case sides continue the texture of the coin’s edge, while discreet hour divisions provide just enough reference for timekeeping. Slim black baton hands stand in sharp contrast against the gold surface, accompanied by a blue cabochon-set crown—a small touch of color against an otherwise warm, monochromatic design.
Turning the watch over exposes the Liberty Head side of the coin with its 1904 date visible, retaining the natural wear acquired during its earlier life as currency. Fitted with a custom dark brown Vachetta leather strap and its original Corum 18k yellow gold buckle.
Introduced in 1964, the Coin Watch remains one of Corum’s most imaginative designs, turning a piece of American history into something that can quite literally be worn on the wrist.
