In 1964, Corum introduced a design that would become one of the most successful novelties in modern watchmaking — the coin watch. By blending historic currency with horology, Corum created a piece that commanded attention for its warm golden glow on the wrist, a style even seen on U.S. presidents over the years.
This 1990s example features a $20 American Double Eagle in 22k yellow gold, carefully split and fitted with a discreet dial beneath a sapphire crystal designed to minimize reflection. The beaded bezel, with subtle notches marking the hours, echoes the ridged edge of the coin, while the case sides and lugs continue that reeded motif — reinforcing the illusion that one is wearing the coin itself. Slim black varnished baton hands provide sharp contrast against the rich gold ground.
The caseback displays the Liberty bust with the 1897 date fully exposed, showing honest wear that speaks to its history.
An extra detail appears in the diamond-set crown — a signature touch that elevates the design. Powered by a quartz movement for low-maintenance wear, the watch is fitted with a Corum brown crocodile strap and a signed plated tang buckle.
Distinctive, conversation-starting, and unmistakably Corum, this is a piece that blends history, design, and charm in equal measure.
