Few timepieces are as mesmerizing as those fully exposed, revealing their honest timekeeping craftsmanship and offering complete transparency into the quality and ingenuity of their maker. While pocket watches no longer occupy the prominence they once did, it is impossible not to admire the artistry embodied in this 1970s Audemars Piguet openworked example.
The 18k white gold case, finished in a satin texture, features a bezel engraved with black Roman numerals and is flanked by an inner diamond-set ring that frames the fully skeletonized golden movement. Elongated blackened leaf-shaped hands adorn the intricately openworked mechanism, whose hand-engraved bridges showcase countless hours of meticulous craftsmanship. Turning the watch over reveals even more of the movement through the exhibition case back, while the tapered bow is further set with diamonds.
A true masterpiece of Audemars Piguet’s openwork tradition, this piece exemplifies the highest level of horological artistry. A closely related variant is prominently illustrated in Audemars Piguet by Gisbert L. Brunner, Christian Pfeiffer-Belli, and Martin K. Wehrli, first edition, plates 16a & 16b, pages 90–91.
This extraordinary pocket watch would be a profound delight for the vintage collector—particularly one who continues to appreciate pocket watches not merely for their historical use, but for the artistry they represent.
